Our thought for this month is that hope is light. I love the idea of light and shadow. I can see how these ideas play out in the world around us as the war between good and evil, hope and fear, hate and love rages on. Hope has become more than just a lovely idea it has become the battle cry of the children of light.
Who is more foolish, the child afraid of the dark or the man afraid of the light? ~Maurice Freehill
We are drawn to hope like a moth to a flame but even as the light draws us in we become more aware of the depth of the shadows. Darkness looks its darkest next to the light.
Fear skulks in the shadows cowering from the light.
It beckons us to stay here in the darkness that is safe. Fear whispers that the light will reveal ALL and that no one wants to see that.
It tells us that the light is too bright and we won’t be able to see. We will stumble and fall and get hurt. Light beckons us to come into the warm and inviting space.
Light tells us that we were made to live here and that fear has lied to us from the start.
Light reveals the truth and dispels the lies.
Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. ~Chinese Proverb
Light and shadows
Light reveals our true selves. Although sometimes it is hard to look and see how we have been changed, marred even, by the acts of darkness whether we committed them or they were acted upon us by others.
Yet in this light is the very essence of hope.
Hope doesn’t shy away from the ugliness of the realities of darkness. Hope courageously steps into the fray and looks the reality of shadow living in the eye. Hope sees the result of the scars and how we have been changed and yet hope sees who we were meant to be and beckons us to face the darkness–our darkness- and be willing to be changed. Everyone who lives in the light has a story to tell. No one gets here for free as the price to live in the light is high because we have to let go of everything that hold us in the shadows of who we were to step in to the light of who we can be.
Living in the light makes us vulnerable because now we can be seen but we can never be who we were meant to be unless we peel away the defences and pretences of the shadowlands…and let our light shine.
Light gives of itself freely, filling all available space. It does not seek anything in return; it asks not whether you are friend or foe. It gives of itself and is not thereby diminished. ~Michael Strassfeld
Shadows and light
A shadow is a distorted image made by the light. the shadows exist because of the light. Shadows provide temporary protection but there is no life where there is no light. Living in the shadowlands is familiar. We know what it takes to survive here but the call of the light is powerful and alluring.
Light brings healing, growth, and color. It is only varying shades of gray in the shadows. They cannot exist in the same space.
The brighter the light the darker the shadows seem.
Sometimes, when we shine brightly, we create deep shadows around us and cause fear, even resentment, in those around us for revealing their shadows but the joy of light also invites others to join us.
Just as fear is contagious so is light.
It is the light that creates the shadows, light that dispels the shadows and light that transform the shadows into places of light.
We are each gifted in a unique and important way. It is our privilege and our adventure to discover our own special light. ~Evelyn Dunbar
What are your shadows made of? What personal pain, trauma or insecurities keeps you hidden? Where have you given up on light, goodness, kindness, hope, faith…love?
In my new job I have been tempted to hide in the shadows but I am forcing myself to stay bright–to shine–even when that makes me feel vulnerable. I realize that we are all either shadow dwellers or former shadow dwellers. I have seen the relief on peoples faces when I keep looking them in the eye and try to see them–their true selves.
What is to give light must endure burning. ~Viktor Frankl
I am a reformed shy girl full of my own darkness and insecurities but the long journey to the light and learning to live in the light has taught me this:
I would rather live in the light for a day than to go back to the shadows. I face the fear everyday that someone will notice me and say “You don’t belong here. Go back to the shadows. Your light is not enough.”
But I fight to stay bright–to stay brave–even as fear and doubt taunt me. I force my self to revel in the light and to embrace the light. Under my breath I find myself singing: This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine”
For light I go directly to the Source of light, not to any of the reflections. ~Peace Pilgrim
I am learning to live as a child of the light for that is what this journey of a more HOPE-full life is about. Let your heart hear hope beckoning you to come into the light. Let yourself believe even in the possibility and join us on our journey toward hope, and ultimately,
to the One who spoke the light into existence,
to the Father of lights in whom there is no shadow of turning,
to the Hope that does not disappoint.
“Hope is the light that shines when all other lights have gone out.-HM
